Preview: WFC CSKA vs. Swansea City Ladies

August 18, 2021, Limassol, Cyprus, Women's Champions League Qualifying Round 1.

On August 18, 2021, our team will face Swansea City Ladies, Wales in the second semifinal of 2021/2022 Women's Champions League Qualifying Round 1 Group 6 that will be played at Tsirion Stadium (Limassol, Cyprus).

Back-to-back champ

Last season Swansea City Ladies secured a league and cup double, having won both Women's Welsh Premier League and WPWL Cup. Earlier this team won League titles in 2010, 2011, 2017, and 2020, as well as Welsh Women's Cup in 2011, 2015, and 2018.

What's new
Less than a week before the start of the qualifying Women's Champions League Qualifying Round Swansea City Ladies announced Chris Llewellyn as their new head coach. Previously he coached in the Swansea City academy at a range of age groups.

Earlier in the middle of July Swansea City signed forward Rhianne Oakley from Pontypridd Town Women.

On July 18, 2021, Swansea City began their preparations for the 2021/2022 season with a 3-1 victory over Torquay United. On August 1 they defeated Exeter City on the road (0:3).

Champions League History
Swansea City Ladies previously played four times in UEFA Women's Champions League Qualifying round (2010/2011, 2011/2012, 2017/2018, 2020/2021) but never succeeded. It won only twice (over Baia Zugdidi in 2010 and over Progres Niederkorn in 2011) and lost eight times. Interestingly that last year Swansea played with Apollon Ladies in the Champions League Qualifying round and lost 0:3. Now, these two teams are in the same Group and have chances to play in the Group 6 final to clinch the second-round spot.

Opinion
Sergey Lavrentyev, WFC CSKA head coach:

“The mood within the team is good, that is the most important thing. Everyone understands perfectly well why we are here. I think we are functionally ready quite well. On the eve of the match, we conducted the final theory and dismantled the opponent. We are getting ready to play. Our opponent Swansea recently changed the coach, otherwise, everything is unchanged. This is a very athletic and tough team that has already conducted the pre-season camp. It won't be easy, but we are ready”.
